My 7 Predictions for Game of Thrones’ Season 7
My 7 Predictions for Game of Thrones’ Season 7
After a really long and painful wait, Game of Thrones fans (including myself) are ecstatic that our beloved HBO TV epic will has finally returned. After an extremely satisfying season 6, what can we expect from the upcoming season 7? For this, let’s look at some of the things the season 7 trailers have revealed to us.Now, before I start, I’ll assume that you guys are all caught up on seasons 1 to 6 of Game of Thrones because it would be too cumbersome to summarize everything that has already happened and, if not, please be warned that there are SPOILERS ahead. With that out of the way, let’s get started. Here are my 7 predictions for season 7 of Game of Thrones:
1. Cersei’s enemies will come from all sides; but, the most dangerous one will be hiding within her court and in plain sight. Cersei Lanister has finally gotten what she has always wanted; but, can she keep it? By the looks of it, she will have her hands full when the season opens. As she stands at the center of the great map of Westeros, the mad queen calmly states the obvious… that her enemies are coming from all sides. This is further reinforced by scenes from several trailers of Daenerys returning to Dragonstone (the kingdom of the Targaryens), the Unsullied raiding Casterly Rock (the Lanister’s home kingdom) and the Dothraki attacking the Lanister’s armies. However, the real danger for Cresei might be coming from someone closer to her heart… her brother and lover, Jaime. In the trailer, Jaime is seen wielding Widow’s Wail, one of the 2 swords forged from Ice, Ned Stark’s gigantic sword (Brienne of Tarth has the other sword, Oath Keeper). Why is it significant? Well, when she was younger, Cersei received a prophecy from Maggy the Frog that she would die at the hands of her ‘valonqar’, which is High Valyrian (language) for ‘little brother’. Most fans have speculated this to mean Tyrion; but, what if the ‘valonqar’ is actually Jaime? The series has painstakingly made it clear in many occasions that Jaime is a few minutes younger than Cresei; and, as we’ve all experienced when watching Game of Thrones, even the minute details have extremely profound meanings. So, how does this connect to Widow’s Wail? Just think about it. Wouldn’t it be more poetic if Cersei had been killed by Jaime wielding a sword made from Ned Stark’s old sword? On a side note, wouldn’t it be cool if Jaime had to go up against or work with Brienne? It would be epic to see both halves of Ice doing battle against or working with each other.
2. The feuding Greyjoys (Euron versus Yara and Theon) will form new alliances which will determine the fate of their clan.As the fog settles in a scene from the first trailer, we see a ship, an iron-born ship of the Greyjoys… but, which Greyjoy? Surely, it is one of Yara and Theon’s ships; or is it? A keen eye will notice that this particular ship is much bigger than the ones Yara and Theon stole in season 6. So, this ship could most probably be one of Euron Greyjoy’s ships. With Yara and Theon foiling Euron’s plan to align with Daenerys, he must now seek out other alliances. The most logical course of action for Euron would be to ally himself with Cersei. This would make the sides more even since Euron’s fleet of ships is the largest in all of Westeros. With Jon Snow’s forces preparing for the coming of the White Walkers, they would probably not want to get involved in the war for the iron throne. This would make for a very interesting queen versus queen battle royalé between Cersei and Daenerys.Speaking of Greyjoy alliances, one scene shows Yara Greyjoy sharing a kiss with Ellaria Martel. What could be transpiring right under Daenerys’ nose? We all know that the Martels hate the Targaryens. The only reason they aligned with them would be to fight a common enemy. What scheme could Ellaria be cooking up against the mother of dragons?
3. Petyr Baelish may finally meet his end at the hands of Arya and Sansa Stark. What evil lurks within the walls of Winterfell? They let a cunning snake into their house and, now, he is spewing his poison on to the Stark family. In several trailers, we see Petyr Baelish lurking in the shadows of Winterfell. In one particular trailer scene he is seen telling Sansa; “Your father and brothers are gone (which isn’t true because Bran is still alive); yet, here you stand.” It seems like Petyr has Sansa wrapped around his ‘little finger’ (pun intended). But, just who is playing who. If you remember, back in season 4, Petyr told Sansa: “A man with no motive is a man no one suspects. Always keep your foes confused. If they don’t know who you are or what you want they can’t know what you plan to do next.” By doing this, Little Finger revealed his secret weapon (misdirection) to Sansa. I suspect that Sansa, by now, knows just how to wield this weapon.Arya Stark, on the other hand, has finally begun scratching people off her ‘revenge list’ by killing Walder Frey in one of the most satisfying moments in season 6. Now, it looks like she is actually in the North and on her way to Winterfell. So, it’s highly possible that news of Jon’s victory over Ramsay Bolton would have reached her. Arya’s return to Winterfell will provide Sansa the perfect ally and weapon to finally deal with Petyr Baelish. I’m afraid that this will be the last season for Little Finger.
4. Melisandre will mislead Daenerys and may force a confrontation between her (Daenerys) and Jon. After being banished from Winterfell by Jon Snow, Melisandre, the red priestess was last seen headed South in season 6. This would put her on a direct course towards Dragonstone. This is highly significant because of two particular reasons. First, it will bring her more clues in her quest for Azor Ahai, a legendary hero who wielded a burning sword called Lightbringer. Second, it may be a way for Melisandre to become a part of Daenerys’ council. In one trailer, she is seen looking out a window to some travellers approaching the castle she is staying in (which I assume is Dragonstone castle). In another scene, Davos, now, Jon Snow’s trusted general, is seen making a plea to someone whose back is turned, but looks a lot like Melisandre. Davos seems to be begging her (and perhaps Daenerys) to join forces against the White Walkers. It might be that Melisandre is purposely misinforming Daenerys… which could lead to a confrontation between Daenerys and Jon.
5. Jorah Mormont will discover that the cure for grayscale may also keep the White Walkers from resurrecting the dead.Jorah Mormont, Daenerys’ loyal knight and one who is in love with her, was sent on a quest (by Daenerys herself) to find a cure for his debilitating disease, grayscale. In one scene, we see (what I believe is) Jorah’s hand covered with greyscale reaching out of an opening in the middle of a wooden door. Now, this might seem like a mundane scene; but, it could hold great significance. In the books, it is implied that the cure for grayscale could also keep White Walkers from raising the dead. If this is true, it could be how humans can turn the tide against the army of the dead.
6. Jon Snow will fail in trying to retrieve the ‘Horn of Winter’ from north of the wall.In one of the trailers, we see Jon Snow and some wildlings running from something north of the Wall. But, why would they risk their lives to go north of the Wall in the first place? My theory is that they were on a quest to find the Horn of Winter, an artifact that, when used, could send the entire Wall crumbling down.In a scene from season 5, Samwell Tarley finds a Night’s Watch cloak buried in the Fist of the First Men. It contained a cache of dragonglass and a horn. Many of us thought nothing of it at first; but, remember, nothing about Game of Thrones is random. Could this horn be the Horn of Winter? If it is, it would make sense that Jon and his team would need to recover it before the White Walkers do.Having said that, I think Jon will fail in his attempt to retrieve the Horn of Winter. Why? Simply because the White Walkers would not be a credible threat if they could not bring down the wall. If, however, the Whites posses the Horn, then it would make for a very compelling story.
7. Daenerys will be revealed as the actual villain of the story. I know that many of you would want to burn me at the stake right now; but, hear me out.If you look at how George R.R. Martin thinks, you will realize that he is very adamant at telling the story you would least expect. He has shown time and again that he hates war (he was actually a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War.) He also hated the feudal system of government. If you think about it, war and the feudal system are aptly represented by Daenerys Targaryen. Do you think he would allow her to sit on the throne? He also keeps stating that; “One man’s hero is another man’s villain.” It would be in line with this statement to turn a beloved hero into a villain. With that sort of mind frame, it wouldn’t be far-fetched that he would make the Mother of Dragons the bad guy.For more on this theory, please read my article: Why I Think Daenerys Targaryen Is the Actual Villain in Game of Thrones.
There you have it. Those are my 7 predictions for season 7 of Game of Thrones. Of course, I could be wrong. So, do you agree with my predictions? What are your predictions? Let me know by commenting below.
